Hygrophorus subalpinus Smith Cap 4-12cm across, broadly convex becoming flat with a slight umbo and sometimes a wavy margin with patches of broken veil attached; opaque and snow-white with a distinct sheen; smooth and sticky with a thin pellicle that is difficult to separate. Gills decurrent, close, narrow; same color as stem. Stem 30-50 x 10-30mm solid, thick, bulbous at the base; white. Veil hairy, white, leaving a thin ring in the center of the stem. Flesh thick; white. Odor mild. Taste mild. Spores ellipsoid, nonamyloid, 8-10 x 4.5-6ì. Deposit white. Habitat singly to gregarious under conifers and melting snow banks. Frequent. Found in the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains, and Michigan. Season May-October. Edible. Comment Giant forms may sometimes be found.
